Six Troops Killed in Explosion Attributed to Al-Qaeda in Yemen's Abyan Province
An explosive device killed six troops and wounded eleven others in southern Yemen on Monday.
The attack occurred in a military vehicle passing through the Modiyah district of Abyan province.
The troops were loyal to a United Arab Emirates-backed secessionist group, the Southern Armed Forces.
Al-Qaeda militants are suspected to be behind the attack, which is the latest in a series of attacks in Yemen.
The secessionist group is at odds with the internationally recognized government, despite being allies in the war against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who control the north and the capital Sanaa.
Al-Naqib accused Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) of carrying out the attack.
AQAP is considered one of Al-Qaeda's most dangerous branches, still active over a decade after the death of founder Osama bin Laden.
They have taken advantage of Yemen's civil war, which began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and forced the internationally recognized government into exile, to establish a stronghold in the country at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
