Saudi Heritage Commission Registers Nearly 6,000 New Urban Heritage Sites
Registration Brings Total Number of Sites to 34,171 Reflecting Architectural Diversity Across Kingdom's Regions.
The Saudi Heritage Commission announced the registration of 5,969 new urban heritage sites in the National Urban Heritage Register.
This move has increased the total number of registered sites to 34,171, highlighting the architectural heritage richness and diversity across various regions of the Kingdom.Registration encompasses numerous sites spread across different regions, with Riyadh Region accounting for 258 sites, Makkah Region for 483, Qassim Region for 761, Asir Region for a significant 3,893 sites, Al-Baha Region for 499 sites, Hail Region for 60 sites, Jazan Region for 8 sites, Al-Jouf Region for 4 sites, and the Eastern Province with only three sites.The registration was conducted in line with Saudi's antiquities and urban heritage laws.
The Heritage Commission has aimed to strengthen legal protection for these sites against encroachment or neglect through this process, securing their preservation for future generations.This move is part of a strategic plan by the commission to expand the scope of legal protection for heritage sites.
It aims at rehabilitating them in ways that enhance national identity and emphasize their cultural and historical value as living monuments of the Kingdom's architectural heritage.The commission encourages society-wide support to monitor and register heritage sites.
