The Al-Ahsa municipality in Saudi Arabia has reported a significant milestone in its public service volunteer program.
During the first half of this year, 5,027 male and female volunteers were given the opportunity to participate in 525 volunteer positions within the municipal and housing sectors.
These efforts resulted in a combined total of 157,394 volunteer hours.
The program aligns with objectives set by the Saudi Ministry of Municipalities and Housing aimed at enhancing the quality of life, humanizing cities, and promoting sustainable development through partnerships across various sectors and fostering a culture of volunteerism. The areas in which these volunteers engaged include public cleanliness initiatives, community monitoring efforts, building compliance checks, event organization tasks, visual distortion monitoring, and environmental preservation campaigns.
According to Al-Ahsa Mayor Essam bin Abdullatif Al-Mulla, the economic return from these activities amounted to SR6,346,349 ($1,700,000).
This demonstrates the tangible impact that volunteer programs can have on both community services and the local economy.Khalid Al-Arji, general director of the Partnerships and Community Responsibility Administration, highlighted how enabling volunteers aligns with broader government objectives.
These include enhancing the role of municipalities in serving the community while developing human resources, as outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
The initiative reflects a growing trend towards community engagement and volunteerism as key components of urban development strategies globally.
