Russia Claims to Have Shot Down Six US-Supplied ATACMS Missiles in Crimea
Russia claimed to have shot down six US-supplied tactical missiles launched by Ukraine, with some reportedly being downed over the annexed Crimea region.
The missiles were identified as Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) rockets.
Ukraine has been requesting more powerful weapons to counter advancing Russian forces.
The Russian defense ministry announced the interception, but did not specify the location.
The Russian-installed leader of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, reported one missile was downed near the village of Donskoye, and warned people not to approach any undetonated submunitions.
The US has not yet confirmed the incident.
A Russian official, Aksyonov, shared a photo of a damaged missile part, claiming it was from an attack in Crimea.
Russia did not confirm any damage or casualties.
Previously, a Ukrainian official reported air defense activation in Simferopol and Dzankoi.
Ukraine has historically attacked Crimea during Russia's occupation, but remained silent on the latest incident.
Last week, the US dispatched ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, and new US weapons are expected to arrive soon, following President Biden's approval.
