Pope Leo XIV Addresses Chagos Refugees, Advocates for Rights of the Weakest
Pope meets with Chagos refugees and emphasizes their right to return home.
Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the rights of marginalized communities against powerful nations during a meeting with Chagos refugees on August 23, 2025.
The controversial displacement of the Chagossian people in the 1960s and 1970s by Britain for the establishment of a US-UK military base on Diego Garcia remains a contentious issue.
In May 2025, the UK and Mauritius signed a treaty transferring sovereignty over the archipelago to Mauritius while maintaining the strategic base's operation.
The Pope expressed his delight over this development, considering it a significant victory in rectifying historical injustices against the Chagossian community.
He particularly praised the Chagossian women for their peaceful advocacy efforts.
The agreement stipulates an annual payment of 101 million pounds ($136 million) by the UK to Mauritius and establishes a trust fund to benefit the Chagossians.
Despite these concessions, concerns remain about future access to the islands.
The Pope called for Mauritian authorities to facilitate the return of displaced islanders, emphasizing that no one should be forced into exile.
