UN rapporteur to join 'Gaza tribunal' organized by Corbyn's Peace and Justice Project
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, will contribute to a two-day event examining Britain's role in the Israel-Hamas war.
A UN special rapporteur has agreed to participate in a 'tribunal' initiated by former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, aimed at investigating Britain's involvement in the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The event, dubbed the "Gaza tribunal," is scheduled for September 4th and 5th at Church House in Westminster.According to Corbyn, who announced this development at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the initiative seeks to address the gap left by the government's refusal to support his private member's bill calling for an official inquiry into the UK's role in the conflict.
This bill was halted during its second reading in July. The former Labour leader emphasized that submissions from legal experts, individuals from Gaza and the West Bank, and others will be accepted, aiming to provide a comprehensive view on the policy aspects of this issue.
Albanese's participation is seen as crucial, given her expertise and position as the UN special rapporteur on the matter.Corbyn has drawn parallels between this tribunal-like initiative and the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq War, suggesting that it will also investigate similar matters, such as the use of the RAF Akrotiri airbase during the conflict.
The event's website further outlines its objective, aiming to "examine Britain’s role in war crimes perpetrated in Gaza" by hearing from experts and witnesses, with the goal of establishing the full extent of the government's complicity in alleged acts against the Palestinian people.Last month, 22 NGOs supported Corbyn's call for an inquiry into the UK's involvement in the conflict.
They indicated their willingness to back an independent tribunal if the government rejected Corbyn's proposal.
