Polish and Czech Security Services Disrupt Russian Spy Networks and Propaganda Operations

Polish security services announced on Thursday that they had raided a Russian spy network in collaboration with Czech intelligence.
The operation came after Czech authorities dismantled a major Russian propaganda network the previous day.

The Polish Internal Security Agency stated that their investigation, which includes raids in Warsaw and Tychy and interrogations, is related to charges against a Polish citizen accused of spying for Russia.

The goal of the spy network was to further Russian foreign policy objectives, such as weakening Poland's international standing and discrediting Ukraine and EU institutions.

A Polish citizen suspected of Russian espionage was investigated by the security agency, leading to charges in January.

The man, who was embedded in Polish and EU parliament circles, carried out tasks commissioned and financed by Russian intelligence.

These tasks involved propaganda activity, disinformation, and political provocation with the objective of building Russian spheres of influence in Europe.

The Czech Republic announced the busting of a Moscow-financed network spreading Russian propaganda and influencing European institutions, including the European Parliament.

The security agency has not disclosed the man's identity.

The Czech Republic has added the Voice of Europe news site and two Ukrainian politicians, Viktor Medvedchuk and Artem Marchevsky, to its sanctions list for attempting to discourage EU aid to Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The Voice of Europe, based in Prague, published statements from politicians demanding the EU halt aid to Ukraine, and some European politicians collaborating with the site received payments from Russian funds for their 2024 EU election campaigns.

The payments targeted politicians from Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Poland.

A German ministry spokeswoman described ongoing network activities as evidence of Russia's extensive influence efforts, targeting Germany as an important victim.

German security authorities will continue investigating and collaborating with foreign partners to prevent such influence operations.
