Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Urges Protests Against Iran's 'War on Women': Sexual Assault Allegations and Crackdown on Headscarves
Iranian Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi, currently in Evin prison in Tehran, called on Iranians to protest against the regime's "war against women" following a new crackdown on women wearing the headscarf.
Mohammadi urged women to share their stories of arrest and sexual assault by authorities using the Farsi hashtag #مجاهة_زنان ("war against women") on social media.
Iran's nationwide operation to enforce the headscarf has resulted in numerous arrests and detentions by the morality police.
Mohammadi asked for support from artists, intellectuals, workers, teachers, and students both inside and outside Iran, emphasizing the power of sharing experiences to expose the misogynistic government and bring it to its knees.
A woman named Nasrin Mohammadi, a human rights activist in Iran, accused the authorities of declaring a "full-scale war against all women" through arrests and assaults.
She is currently in jail and has been joined by Dina Ghalibaf, a journalist and student who was arrested for accusing security forces of sexual assault during a previous arrest.
Mohammadi, 52, has spent much of the past two decades in and out of jail for her activism and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year.
She has been imprisoned since November 2021 and has not seen her husband and twin children, who live in Paris, for several years.
