Migrant Vessel Sinks Off Malaysia-Thailand Border, Hundreds Missing
At least 10 survivors and one body have been recovered after a boat carrying around 300 people sank near the Thailand-Malaysia border.
KUALA LUMPUR: A vessel carrying hundreds of passengers sank near the Thailand-Malaysia border, resulting in numerous missing individuals.
According to First Admiral Romli Mustafa, director of the northern Malaysian states' maritime authority (Kedah and Perlis), the boat departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, with approximately 300 people on board before it capsized.
Among those rescued were three Myanmar men, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man.
Additionally, one body was recovered—identified as a Rohingya woman.
The majority-Muslim Rohingya minority often flees Myanmar due to persecution and denial of citizenship by the Buddhist-majority government.
The passengers initially boarded a large vessel but were instructed to transfer to three smaller boats near the border to evade detection.
The status of the other two smaller boats remains unknown, with search-and-rescue operations ongoing.
