Lebanese Officials: Mossad Behind Killing of US-Sanctioned Lebanese Man Accused of Funding Hamas

A Lebanese minister and two senior officials have preliminarily accused Israel's Mossad spy agency of being behind the killing of a US-sanctioned Lebanese man named Mohammad Sarur.
Sarur, 57, was found dead with multiple bullet wounds in a villa in Beit Mery last Tuesday.

Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi stated that the data suggests the involvement of intelligence services, confirming it was likely a reference to Mossad.

The US Treasury had sanctioned Sarur in August 2019 for transferring "tens of millions of dollars" from Iran's Revolutionary Guards to Hamas through Hezbollah.

Israeli government officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Since October 7, the Lebanese group has been engaging in near-daily cross-border clashes with the Israeli military, following Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel.

A Lebanese judicial official and a security source told AFP that they believe Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, was behind the assassination of Lebanese businessman Imad Sarur.

The preliminary investigation results suggest that Mossad used Lebanese and Syrian agents to lure Sarur to a villa in Beit Mery, where he was killed with silenced weapons.

Fingerprints were wiped from the crime scene.

The judicial official also mentioned that preliminary information points to Mossad, but the investigation is ongoing, with investigators collecting evidence, particularly from communications data.

The US Treasury accused Ali Sarur of acting as a go-between for money transfers between Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the militant group Hamas.

Sarur reportedly worked with Hezbollah operatives to ensure funds reached Hamas's armed wing.

The Treasury also noted Sarur's history with Hezbollah's sanctioned bank, Bayt Al-Mal.

In 2019, the Lebanese army reportedly arrested a suspected Mossad agent involved in a failed assassination attempt on a Hamas official in Lebanon's south the previous year.

This incident occurred amidst a series of Israeli assassinations of Palestinian militants in Lebanon during the 1970s, following the killing of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.
