IAEA Chief Grossi to Visit Iran Amid Nuclear Tensions, Meets Officials Before Conference
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, is set to visit Iran from May 6-8 for a nuclear conference in Isfahan and to meet Iranian officials.
Grossi had previously announced plans to visit Tehran to improve relations between the IAEA and Iran, which have been strained.
Iran is continuing to enrich uranium at a high rate of around 7 kg per month to 60 percent purity, according to Grossi.
Iran's enrichment of uranium to 60% is a significant step towards weapons-grade nuclear material, which is not required for commercial use in nuclear power production.
Iran maintains that it is not seeking nuclear weapons, but no other country has enriched to this level without producing weapons.
The 2015 nuclear deal, which limited Iran's uranium enrichment to 3.67%, has effectively disintegrated since the US withdrawal in 2018 and the re-imposition of sanctions.
