I Remain Resolute in My Pursuit of a Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza
UN Secretary-General António Guterres vowed to keep fighting for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, stating the Security Council's lack of action was damaging its credibility.
During the Doha Forum in Qatar, he criticized the council's ineffectiveness due to global divisions. Following a US veto of a ceasefire resolution after the October 7 Hamas attacks, Guterres reaffirmed his dedication to preventing a humanitarian disaster in the region.
Guterres highlighted the need to modernize international structures for equality and solidarity, emphasizing that the Security Council's disunity hinders resolutions on global issues from Ukraine to Myanmar. He noted that ongoing violence in Gaza, with over 17,000 deaths since October 7, necessitates an immediate ceasefire.
At the same conference, UNRWA leader Philippe Lazzarini argued that dehumanizing Palestinians has led to an international acceptance of the Gaza bombardment.
Guterres called for unity in tackling global challenges, citing climate change as a peril demanding higher climate justice ambitions and a shift towards renewable energy. He encouraged leaders to make significant emission cuts at COP28.
Furthermore, Guterres pointed out the dangers and potential of new technologies like generative AI, underscoring the need for regulation and governance. He mentioned the formation of a High-Level Advisory Body to provide AI recommendations.
Stressing the urgency of global governance reform, he outlined a to-do list for September's Summit of the Future, including a digital compact, financial architecture adjustments, Security Council reforms, and a new peace agenda.
These reforms aim to bolster conflict resolution, equity, and the voice of developing countries. Guterres concluded that it is time to create a better future through united solutions and substantial world transformation.
