Hamas Slams US Veto of UN Membership for Palestine at Security Council
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group ruling Gaza, issued a statement on Friday condemning the United States for vetoing a draft resolution at the UN Security Council that would have granted Palestine full membership in the UN.
The veto came as international concern grew over the ongoing conflict in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The vote was anticipated, as the US had previously signaled its intention to block the resolution, which was introduced by Algeria and received support from 12 other countries.
Britain and Switzerland abstained from the vote.
The draft resolution "recommends to the General Assembly that the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations." The US veto came more than six months into Israel's offensive in Gaza, in response to a deadly attack by Hamas militants on October 7.
