Global Developments: UAE Banking Surge, Merkel's NATO Defense, UK Storm Havoc, and Escalating Ukraine Conflict

Banking sector in UAE sees rise in deposits with a 3.9% increase, but faces profitability challenges due to soaring impairment charges.
In the UAE, the banking sector is experiencing boosts in deposits with a 3.9% rise during the third quarter, particularly due to a 5.6% increase in time deposits, alongside a 4.9% uptick in retail lending. However, this growth is tempered by profitability challenges, highlighted by a 124.9% surge in impairment charges leading to a notable 5.5% drop in net income, despite a 3.5% rise in total operating income driven by higher non-interest income.

Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, efforts to ease economic pressures continue as King Salman extends the Citizen’s Account Program through 2025 upon the Crown Prince's recommendation. This initiative, aimed at reducing financial burdens on citizens amidst evolving economic circumstances, allows ongoing beneficiary registration and financial support transfers, following an earlier directive from July 2022.

Transitioning to Europe, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended her decision in 2008 to block Ukraine's NATO membership, arguing it prevented an earlier military conflict with Russia. While facing criticism from figures like former Ukrainian President Zelensky, Merkel stands by her peace efforts, though they ultimately couldn’t avert the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Back in the UK, Storm Bert has wreaked havoc, resulting in five fatalities, severe flooding in Wales, and extensive travel disruptions with over 300 flights canceled at Heathrow. The storm’s impact, including heavy rainfall and power outages, has led to multiple warnings for strong winds as emergency services continue to tackle the ongoing crisis.

In the Middle East, the EU has reaffirmed its support for UN peacekeepers in Lebanon amid escalating Hezbollah-Israel tensions, with EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell committing €200 million to strengthen Lebanese military capabilities. Borrell's visit to Beirut highlights the EU's condemnation of attacks on UNIFIL and support for UNRWA amidst regional legislative challenges.

Lastly, focusing on Eastern Europe, Ukrainian forces are reportedly losing ground in the Russian province of Kursk, with territory control decreasing significantly as Russia mobilizes troops following a Ukrainian incursion. President Zelensky underscores the urgent need for morale-boosting among Ukrainian troops as the conflict intensifies, marking another critical phase in the ongoing geopolitical struggle.
