From Fish Farm Wastewater to War-Torn Sandals: Stories of Innovation, Tragedy, and Conflict Across the Globe

Using fish farming wastewater for irrigation boosts date palm productivity, enhances fruit quality, and aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
A recent study by the Saudi Ministry of Environment has revealed that using fish farming wastewater for irrigation greatly boosts date palm productivity, with fruit weight, length, and diameter showing significant increases. Additionally, key nutrients in dates surged, enhancing both their quality and economic value, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 for sustainable agricultural practices.

Meanwhile, in Khan Younis, Gaza, a carpenter named Saber Dawas has crafted wooden-soled sandals for his daughter amidst severe shortages of basic goods due to the ongoing conflict. These innovative sandals have become popular among neighbors facing humanitarian crises and resource scarcity exacerbated by the region's tense situation and closed borders.

Turning to Algiers, a tragic building collapse in the historic Casbah district has claimed the life of a woman and injured three family members. This UNESCO-listed site, significant for its role in Algeria's war for independence, has faced numerous structural failures despite ongoing conservation efforts.

In the ongoing conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces, Russian troops have reclaimed about 10 settlements in a major counter-offensive in the Kursk region. This move follows a substantial Ukrainian attack and disputes President Zelensky's claim of controlling 100 settlements in the region, according to Major General Apti Alaudinov.

In Italy, a court has lifted the detention order on the Geo Barents, a rescue ship operated by Médecins Sans Frontières, allowing it to resume its humanitarian missions. The vessel had been grounded amid accusations of improper coordination during migrant rescues, reflecting the government's ongoing crackdown on NGO activities in the Mediterranean.

Finally, Kosovo prosecutors have charged 45 individuals, including politician Milan Radoicic, over a deadly gunfight in Banjska. The incident, which involved Serb gunmen and resulted in multiple deaths, has prompted the EU and US to call for Serbia to ensure justice is served, amidst allegations of terrorism and money laundering.
