EU Announces New Sanctions on Iran Over Alleged Self-Defense Attack; Tehran's Foreign Minister Criticizes Decision, Calls for Sanctions on Israel
On X, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian expressed regret over the European Union (EU) announcing new sanctions against Iran following Iran's attack against Israel.
According to Amirabdollahian, Iran was acting in self-defense after Israel allegedly bombed Iran's embassy compound in Damascus.
The day before, on Monday, EU foreign ministers had agreed in principle to expand existing sanctions on Iran.
This expansion would involve restricting Iran's weapons exports of drones and missiles to Iranian proxies and Russia.
Amirabdollahian criticized the EU's decision, stating that it was unlawful for the EU to impose restrictions on Iran for exercising its right to self-defense.
He urged the EU to instead apply sanctions on Israel.
The EU's decision to expand sanctions against Iran requires further approval in Brussels before it can take effect.
This approval process will involve creating a legal framework for the new sanctions.
