China Coast Guard Ship Formation Sails Through Senkaku Islands Amid Rising Tensions with Japan
A China Coast Guard ship formation conducted a patrol through the waters of the Senkaku Islands, sparking tensions over territorial disputes and diplomatic remarks regarding Taiwan.
On Sunday, the China Coast Guard announced that one of its formations had conducted a 'rights enforcement patrol' within the territorial waters of the Diaoyu Islands.
Known as Senkaku in Japan, these islands are a significant point of contention between Beijing and Tokyo, with both countries claiming sovereignty over them.
The operation by the China Coast Guard was described as lawful and aimed at upholding its rights and interests.
The heightened tensions come amid recent diplomatic sparring between China and Japan following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's statement in parliament on November 7 regarding a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
Takaichi suggested that such an event could provoke a military response from Tokyo, which has traditionally avoided explicit public remarks about Taiwan for strategic reasons, maintaining an ambiguous stance similar to that of its key ally, the United States.
China views Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to reunite with it.
The proximity of Taiwan to Japanese territory further complicates this geopolitical dispute.
In response to Takaichi's remarks, China has signaled its expectation for retraction but has also intensified its military activities around Taiwan, including air and naval patrols that Taiwan monitors regularly.
The recent escalation prompted Beijing to caution Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan, while Tokyo urged appropriate measures from the Chinese side.
Furthermore, three major Chinese airlines announced flexible ticket policies for travel to Japan due to the ongoing tensions.
In a separate development, Taiwan's defense ministry reported that it detected 30 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval ships operating in its vicinity over the past 24 hours, part of what Taipei describes as an ongoing military pressure campaign.
Both countries continue to face challenges related to historical territorial claims and contemporary geopolitical strategies, with Taiwan caught at the center amid these regional tensions.
