Colombian Officials Confirm Seven Children Killed in Airstrike Against Rebel Group
Human rights ombudswoman Iris Marin states that seven children were killed during an airstrike in Guaviare province, as President Gustavo Petro works to regain control over the region.
BOGOTA: In a recent development concerning Colombia's ongoing conflict, officials have reported that at least seven children lost their lives following an airstrike carried out against a rebel group in the country's southern region of Guaviare.
The Colombian government, under President Gustavo Petro, has intensified efforts to reassert control over these rural areas, which have seen growing influence from insurgent groups such as FARC-EMC.
According to Iris Marin, Colombia's human rights ombudswoman, the children killed in this strike had been forcibly recruited by rebel factions and were being utilized as 'human shields' during the conflict.
Initially reporting six fatalities, Marin updated her statement after confirmation from the country’s Forensic Medicine Institute to reflect an accurate death toll of seven.
The incident has reignited discussions on the safety of minors within Colombia's volatile landscape.
Notably, this event echoes a similar controversy in 2019 when an ex-Defense Minister resigned following revelations that the government had covered up the deaths of eight children during an airstrike in Caqueta province.
The military in Colombia maintains that at least nineteen combatants were eliminated in Tuesday’s engagement, including the seven minors.
President Petro defended his decision to order the strike by emphasizing the need to prevent a potential ambush on government troops, stating regret for any loss of life and asserting the necessity to protect soldiers from imminent danger.
This particular airstrike marks a shift back toward military action against insurgent groups under the current administration, which had previously suspended such operations out of concern for civilian casualties.
The escalation is part of Colombia's efforts to counteract the expansion of criminal organizations in territories vacated by the FARC following their 2016 peace agreement with the Colombian government.
Petro has also criticized foreign military strikes against drug trafficking targets, referring them as 'extrajudicial executions'.
However, he maintains a distinction between these actions and Colombia's own counter-insurgency operations, emphasizing that the latter involve groups actively engaged in hostilities against both military personnel and civilians.
The situation highlights the complex dynamics of Colombia’s ongoing peace process and the delicate balance the government must maintain to combat insurgent threats while safeguarding human rights.
