Belgium Investigates Drone Sightings After Overnight Flight Disruptions
Belgian authorities probe drone sightings that led to flight halts at multiple airports, causing overnight delays for hundreds of passengers.
Belgian authorities are investigating reports of drones that led to the suspension of air traffic at several major airports in the country.
The incidents occurred on Tuesday evening and resulted in the cancellation of dozens of flights and the grounding of hundreds of passengers who were forced to spend the night at Brussels Airport.
The main airport in Brussels, as well as Liege Airport, a significant freight hub, both experienced disruptions due to suspected drone activity in their vicinity.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the number of drones involved and the identities behind these incidents.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin emphasized the need for coordinated action in response to such threats, stating that 'the recurrence of drone-related incidents directly affects the security of our country.'
The recent spate of unexplained drone sightings near airports and military installations across Europe has heightened concerns over potential foreign involvement, particularly as tensions persist with regard to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Belgian authorities have reported similar drone activity near the Kleine-Brogel military base, where US nuclear weapons are reportedly stored.
Despite the disruptions, flights were able to resume early Wednesday morning following a temporary halt that lasted for approximately six hours at some airports.
The incidents have raised alarms about national security, with Flemish media outlets also reporting additional sightings near military bases, though these reports remain unconfirmed by authorities.
Defense Minister Theo Francken suggested that the activities appear to be orchestrated by 'professionals' aiming to incite panic and destabilize Belgium, without attributing direct blame to any specific country.
