At least 16 Dead, 28 Missing in Second Migrant Boat Disaster off Djibouti Coast in Three Weeks
At least 16 people have died and 28 are missing after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti.
The incident occurred about two weeks after another boat carrying mainly Ethiopian migrants sank, claiming several dozen lives.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed the latest tragedy in a post, stating that children were among the passengers.
The local IOM branch is assisting authorities with search and rescue efforts.
Both incidents occurred on the Eastern Migration Route, which has seen numerous deadly accidents.
A boat carrying over 60 Ethiopian migrants sank off the coast of Godoria in Djibouti on April 8.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 38 bodies, including children, were recovered, while six people were missing.
The Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti confirmed that the boat was transporting Ethiopian migrants from Djibouti to Yemen.
Thousands of African migrants risk the dangerous "Eastern Route" across the Red Sea and through war-torn Yemen each year, seeking to escape conflict, natural disasters, or better economic opportunities.
