Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praises the resolute decision by the US to impose sanctions on Russia's energy sector, as the European Union enacts its 19th package of sanctions against Moscow.
BRUSSELS: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has commended the 'strong and much-needed' message conveyed through the recent US sanctions on Russia’s energy sector.
These sanctions, targeting Rosneft and Lukoil, were imposed by President
Donald Trump in response to stalled discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, this move sends a significant signal to other countries worldwide, encouraging them to join the sanctions effort.
The US sanctions come as the European Union (EU) also ramps up pressure on Russia by approving its 19th package of sanctions designed to force an end to the three-and-a-half-year-long invasion.
As part of this new wave of measures, the EU has advanced the implementation of a ban on the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia by one year to January 2027.
The bloc has also targeted Moscow's fossil fuel sector by blacklisting over 100 more tankers from its so-called 'shadow fleet' of aging oil vessels and imposing travel restrictions on Russian diplomats suspected of engaging in espionage.
In response to these sanctions, the Russian government views them as counterproductive and detrimental to diplomatic efforts.
The country claims it has developed a strong immunity to Western restrictions and continues to progress with its economic development, including in the energy sector.
Despite these assertions, international pressure mounts on Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine.
