European diplomats are now advocating for a more substantial role in the region, including support for stability and eventual reconstruction efforts.
The EU has provided significant assistance to the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the occupied West Bank, and has pledged to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Additionally, they have expressed interest in expanding their involvement to include a police support program and participation in the ceasefire plan's oversight body.
The European Border Assistance Mission in Rafah, established in 2005, has already been actively involved in facilitating the movement of individuals out of Gaza, particularly during periods of ceasefire.
This mission has helped over 4,176 individuals leave the Gaza Strip since its inception, including 1,683 medical patients.
