Ukraine's Foreign Minister Visits India to Strengthen Ties and Seek Support for Peace in Ukraine
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, visited New Delhi on Thursday for a two-day trip to strengthen relations and cooperation between Ukraine and India.
Kuleba will meet with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the deputy national security adviser.
On Thursday, he also paid respects to Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi at the Rajghat memorial site.
Kuleba's visit follows a week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, without criticizing Putin over the war in Ukraine, as India considers Russia an ally from the Cold War era.
India has emphasized diplomacy and dialogue for ending the Russia-Ukraine war and has offered support for peace efforts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's consistent stance for peace and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine through a social media post.
Modi also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, agreeing to strengthen their relationship and reiterating the importance of dialogue for resolving the conflict.
India, under the leadership of Modi, has positioned itself as a potential mediator between the West and Russia regarding the war in Ukraine.
In a recent phone call, Zelensky urged India to join a peace summit organized by Switzerland.
Ukraine is keen on enhancing trade and economic ties with India, particularly in agriculture, aviation, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products.
At the UN, India has abstained from voting against Russia and has increased its purchases of Russian oil following the invasion.
India is increasing its interactions with Western powers, including the US and the European Union, due to disruptions in arms and technology supplies from Russia caused by the war.
India is also a part of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) with the US, Australia, and Japan.
Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, Emine Dzhaparova, visited India last year and urged India to take a more active role in helping end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Kyiv welcoming any efforts towards resolving the conflict.
