UK Prime Minister Summons University Leaders to Discuss Antisemitism and Campus Safety Amid Pro-Palestinian Protests
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is calling a meeting with university leaders this week to discuss antisemitism on campuses and ensure Jewish students feel safe following pro-Palestinian protests.
Sunak expects robust action from universities and emphasized that while debates should be rigorous, they should also be tolerant and respectful.
The prime minister also stated that free speech does not include harassment or incitement to violence.
Pro-Palestinian protests have been ongoing at US universities since mid-April, and the movement has spread to Europe, with students at Oxford and Cambridge setting up encampments in solidarity.
Cambridge University prioritizes the safety of all staff and students and is committed to freedom of speech, but will not tolerate antisemitism, Islamophobia, or any other form of racial or religious hatred.
Protests have been met with police intervention in various European countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, and France, as Israeli forces take control of the main border crossing between Egypt and southern Gaza.
