Supreme Court Halts Immediate Payment of Trump-Admin Food Benefits During Shutdown
The US Supreme Court has issued a temporary order, pausing the immediate payment of SNAP food benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.
The United States Supreme Court announced on Friday that the Trump administration does not have to immediately pay Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the government shutdown.
This decision leaves millions of Americans uncertain about their access to food assistance programs.
A lower court had previously ruled that the administration must fully fund SNAP for November by the end of last week's business day, directing the use of contingency funds to make a multi-billion-dollar payment to states for distributing food stamps to around 42 million recipients.
However, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has issued an administrative stay, temporarily halting this process.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) argued that only Congress holds the power to resolve the funding crisis.
The court's decision comes amid a broader scenario where US government agencies have been increasingly affected by the ongoing shutdown.
Despite efforts by federal authorities to disperse necessary funds, SNAP funding remains unresolved as Democratic officials express frustration over the administration’s legal challenges and lack of action.
