Sealed Train Journey Reflects Tensions Between Russia and Lithuania

Sealed Train Journey Reflects Tensions Between Russia and Lithuania

The Moscow-Kaliningrad sealed train is a symbol of ongoing tensions between Russia and Lithuania, echoing the days of the Cold War.
KALININGRAD: The 19-hour journey aboard the Russian word for amber, the 'Yantar,' marks the only land route connecting mainland Russia to its Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad.

This unique train route spends three hours sealed within Lithuania's borders due to geopolitical tensions that have intensified since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Baltic state, one of Europe’s most vocal advocates for a hardline stance against Russia, sees the presence of Russian troops as hostile.

Passengers are locked inside their carriages to prevent any from attempting to disembark within Lithuanian territory.

This precaution also includes restricting the use of toilets when the train stops, ensuring that no one can exit without authorization.

The train's assistant announces the approaching border with Lithuania, reminding passengers of their confined situation.

Traveling on this train has become increasingly complex for Russian citizens since 2022.

Despite being half-empty, sleeping quarters are cramped and uncomfortably warm due to the heating system.

Passengers require a visa for the EU’s Schengen zone or a special transit permit, which cannot be utilized outside of the sealed train.

Lithuania's State Border Guard Service confirms that neither European Union citizens nor Russian citizens are permitted to exit the train except in cases involving urgent humanitarian reasons such as severe illness.

This policy explains why doors and windows are sealed throughout the journey.

Passengers on board reflect on the modern-day implications of this Cold War-style travel experience.

Nikolai, a Russian passenger, describes the train ride as akin to living through 'hot war' conditions with the West, particularly regarding Kaliningrad's strategic military importance and its role in Russia's ongoing geopolitical dispute with Western nations.

The journey from Kena station to Kybartai border checkpoint further cements Lithuania’s stance against Russia.

Posters aboard the train display strong anti-war messages aimed at Russian passengers, with photographs of destroyed Ukrainian cities serving as a stark reminder of the conflict.

Upon reaching Kaliningrad, passengers are reminded that this journey is less about convenience and more about the delicate balance of international relations between Russia and its neighboring countries.
