EU Condemns Brutality of RSF Forces in Sudan, Calls for Immediate Humanitarian Access
The European Union has denounced the actions of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), criticizing their 'brutality' and urging for safe passage for humanitarian organizations.
BRUSSELS: The European Union released a statement on Wednesday condemning the alleged brutality displayed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.
This comes amid reports of mass atrocities and the killing of five Red Crescent volunteers in Kordofan.
The statement, issued by the EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, emphasizes that 'civilians being targeted based on their ethnicity underscores the brutality' of the RSF.
Furthermore, it asserts that the RSF holds responsibility for safeguarding civilians, aid workers, local responders, and journalists in areas under their control.
This statement was co-signed by the EU's commissioner for crisis management, Hadja Lahbib, who stressed the need for humanitarian organizations to receive 'immediate, safe and unconditional access' to those in need.
The statement also urges that civilians should be allowed to leave the city safely.
El-Fasher, a key city recently captured by the RSF, has been under an 18-month siege marked by starvation and bombardment.
The paramilitary group has been locked in conflict with the Sudanese army since April 2023 and launched their final assault on the city in recent days, seizing the last positions held by the military.
In the neighboring region of North Kordofan, five Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers were killed in Bara on Monday, according to reports from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent.
Three others remain missing since the RSF took control of the town on Saturday.
