Saudi Arabia seizes over 922 kg of banned substances on UN's world anti-drug day
The Kingdom’s customs authority announced that more than 922 kg of banned substances were seized in the past year, as officials marked the UN’s world anti-drug day.
RIYADH: More than 922 kg of banned substances, including over 20 million pills, have been confiscated in Saudi Arabia over the last year, according to the Kingdom's customs authority.
The announcement was made on Thursday, which marked the UN's International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Events promoting anti-drug awareness were held across the country, particularly in Riyadh and Asir regions, educating attendees about the dangers of drug use.
Smugglers have attempted various methods to bring contraband into the country, such as concealing items within food shipments, household utensils, vehicles, shoes, and even inside their body cavities, according to the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority.
The organization emphasizes that combating drugs is a top priority and will continue to strengthen border security measures.
Jasim Mohamed Albudaiwi, the secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), stated that GCC countries prioritize anti-drug measures due to their detrimental effects on families and society.
Albudaiwi also stressed the importance of reintegrating recovering drug addicts into society and acknowledged the roles played by schools, media outlets, religious leaders, and civil society institutions in preventing drug use.
Additionally, the Naif College for National Security in Riyadh celebrated the graduation of 63 trainees from various courses, including anti-drug programs.
Maj. Gen. Muhammad bin Saeed Al-Qarni, the director general of narcotics control, congratulated the graduates and highlighted the full support provided to the Kingdom's anti-drug initiatives by its leadership.
