MEXICO CITY: A mass shooting occurred in the central Mexican city of Irapuato on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of at least 12 individuals, including a 17-year-old minor.
Additionally, approximately 20 others were hospitalized due to gunshot wounds.
The incident took place during an evening party celebrating the Nativity of John the Baptist, according to local media reports.
Social media footage showed people dancing and a band playing before gunfire erupted.
Guanajuato has long been one of the most violence-plagued states in Mexico.
On Tuesday alone, five more individuals were killed in other parts of the state, as confirmed by the attorney general's office.
The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed regret over the tragic event and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.
