Saudi Arabia's Ambitious Goal: Recycling 95% of Waste to Boost GDP by SR120 Billion
Saudi Arabia is targeting a 95% recycling rate and aims to add SR120 billion to its GDP through the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's (MEWA) waste sector development plan.
This initiative is designed to recycle 100 million tons annually and create over 100,000 jobs, supporting Saudi Vision 2030.
The Ministry's 2023 annual report outlines commitments to sustainable development with strategies including the National Environmental Strategy, featuring 65 sector initiatives and a SR55 billion investment.
Currently, the nation's recycling rate is a low 3-4%, but plans are underway to raise it significantly.
The report underlines the necessity of proper management of hazardous wastes, like medical refuse, to protect the public.
MEWA collaborates with the private sector through a special center for waste management. Additionally, the Ministry's efforts have conserved over 90,000 hectares and led to the planting of 50 million trees, increasing environmental awareness and life quality.
The report also celebrates a considerable reduction in dust storms, recorded at only 10%, thanks to various environmental measures, including land preservation and reforestation.
