Saudi Arabia Prepares for Ramadan 2026 with Crescent Moon Sighting Expected in February
Astronomical projections indicate holy month likely to begin in mid-February, pending official moon observation
Saudi Arabia is preparing for the start of Ramadan in 2026, with astronomical calculations indicating that the holy month is likely to begin in mid-February, subject to the official sighting of the crescent moon.
According to preliminary forecasts by regional astronomical centres, the new moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Ramadan is expected to occur in the second half of February.
As is customary in the kingdom, the Supreme Court will call on Muslims to observe the crescent moon on the designated evening, with the official start date confirmed only after verified sightings.
If the crescent is sighted as projected, Ramadan 2026 is expected to commence the following day.
Should visibility conditions prevent confirmation, the current month of Sha’ban would complete thirty days before the fasting month begins.
The precise date therefore remains dependent on atmospheric clarity and local observation.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer and reflection.
In Saudi Arabia, the holy month is marked by extended mosque attendance, community gatherings and increased charitable activity, alongside adjustments to public and private sector working hours.
Because the Islamic calendar is approximately eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, Ramadan shifts earlier each year.
The anticipated February start in 2026 reflects this gradual annual progression.
Authorities are expected to issue official guidance closer to the time, confirming the exact date following moon sighting procedures.
Until then, astronomical projections provide a preliminary indication of when the holy month is likely to begin.
