Saudi Arabia Joins Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, Elevating Its Role in Shaping AI Governance
Riyadh becomes a member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, underscoring its leadership in responsible AI and alignment with international standards
Saudi Arabia has officially joined the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), a multilateral initiative hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that brings together more than forty nations to advance the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence.
The announcement was made by the President of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, reflecting the Kingdom’s deepening engagement in international technological governance.
Saudi Arabia’s accession to GPAI signals its intent to play a proactive role in shaping global standards for ethical and reliable AI, while addressing emerging risks and opportunities associated with the technology.
Dr. Al-Ghamdi emphasised that joining the partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives, which prioritise digital transformation and the localisation of advanced technologies to boost the contribution of the digital economy to national gross domestic product.
The GPAI membership is expected to expand AI risk-monitoring capabilities to the Middle East and integrate regional priorities with international best practices, supporting initiatives such as the Riyadh Charter on AI, which aims to ensure that technological development benefits humanity.
Saudi Arabia already ranks among the top contributors to the OECD’s AI Policy Observatory, demonstrating its commitment to international governance frameworks.
The Kingdom’s engagement in GPAI builds on its broader strategy to cultivate global partnerships in artificial intelligence.
Saudi representatives have consistently participated in GPAI sessions and plenary meetings, underscoring the nation’s ongoing efforts to share expertise and collaborate on AI policy and innovation.
As a member of the partnership, Riyadh will contribute to international research projects, co-design ethical frameworks, and help shape policies that govern AI’s societal impacts, cementing its role as a regional and global AI leader.
