Saudi Arabia and UK Sign $5M Agreement with UNICEF to Combat Malnutrition in Somalia
Saudi Arabia's humanitarian aid agency KSrelief and the UK signed a $5 million cooperation agreement with UNICEF to help combat malnutrition in Somalia.
The deal was signed by KSrelief's Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah and British Minister for Development and Africa Andrew Mitchell in Riyadh.
Each party will contribute $2.5 million, and the funds will benefit 101,000 children by providing nutrition services, water, and hygiene supplies in 15 high-risk areas.
The agreement is part of ongoing humanitarian projects between the Kingdom and the UK, and the discussion also covered increasing aid to Gaza and advancing peace in Sudan.
Saudi Arabia and the UK have already invested $22 million in humanitarian aid and cooperation programs in Somalia, Sudan, and other countries.
They plan to deliver more projects in Sudan, Yemen, Bangladesh, and Ukraine.
Both countries aim to enhance their partnership by exploring new areas of cooperation and building on their previous experiences in health interventions, education infrastructure development, and livelihood creation programs.
The UK's International Development Secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss increasing joint funding with Saudi Arabia to support communities affected by conflict around the world.
The funding will help those in need in Somalia, Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
Trevelyan also discussed the need to end the conflict in Gaza with her Saudi partners, aiming for an immediate pause in fighting, hostage releases, and aid delivery.
In separate talks, Trevelyan and Saudi's Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, discussed cooperation on relief and humanitarian affairs worldwide and topics from the Second Strategic Dialogue for Development and Humanitarian Aid between the two countries.
During his visit to Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Saudi Fund for Development representatives will sign an agreement to enhance cooperation between the two countries, aligning with the United Nations sustainable development goals.
