Rome Tower Collapse Adds to Italy's Workplace Toll
Investigation Launched After Death of Romanian Worker at Renovation Site Near Colosseum; Trade Unions Demand Action.
The collapse of a medieval tower in Rome has drawn international attention, but for trade unions, it is just the latest in a series of workplace tragedies in Italy.
Natale Di Cola, secretary general of the CGIL union in Rome, organized a torchlight procession for the worker who died after being trapped under rubble from the partially collapsed Torre dei Conti building on Monday.
The 66-year-old Romanian man, Octav Stroici, died in the hospital after working on a public project funded by the European Union.
Colleagues have expressed concerns over site safety.
With 575 workplace fatalities reported so far this year, Italian unions are calling for urgent action from institutions and corporations to address the issue, which is slightly above the EU average.
The same day as the Rome incident, four other workers died in workplace accidents.
