Queen Rania of Jordan Calls for Just Solution to Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Urges Global Unity and Equal Human Rights
Queen Rania of Jordan spoke at the Milken Institute Global Conference 2024 in Los Angeles, discussing the global effects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza.
She noted that the war has deepened old fractures and created new divisions, leading to a growing global polarization.
Polarization, she explained, limits thinking, actions, and dialogue, and can make those outside our perceived camp appear as enemies.
Queen Rania called for a just solution to the conflict to prevent further global polarization.
Queen Rania of Jordan emphasized that peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be achieved through violence, but rather through negotiations, political process, evenhandedness, and commitment.
She stressed the importance of actual Palestinian statehood for achieving security in the region.
The conflict, she noted, is rooted in the illegal occupation, and true safety and security for Israel can only be achieved by ending the occupation.
Queen Rania criticized the selective empathy shown towards the conflict, which has caused people to feel compelled to take sides and shrunk the middle ground.
She expressed concern that the Palestinians have been pushed to the periphery, where their suffering has become almost unnoticed.
Queen Rania of Jordan called for finding a middle ground in the Israel-Palestine conflict, emphasizing the importance of putting people first and impartially applying the law.
She highlighted the significant number of civilian deaths during the Gaza war, particularly among doctors, aid workers, journalists, and children, numbering 14,500.
While she did not label Israel's actions as genocide, she found it shocking that the discussion around this designation was taking place given the high death toll.
The world had collectively condemned Hamas' attacks on Israel that initiated the conflict.
Queen Rania of Jordan criticized the lack of international response to mass deaths in Gaza compared to other conflicts, emphasizing the importance of equal value for human life and moral consistency.
She highlighted the US's role in the conflict due to its significant influence on Israel and called for a legal framework recognized by the international community and US accountability when Israel violates terms.
She also stressed the need for healing and trust-building between Israelis and Palestinians for a secure future.
The Milken Institute Global Conference, held annually for the past 27 years, is taking place from Sunday to Wednesday with the theme "Shaping a Shared Future." Discussions at the event will cover various topics such as geopolitical tensions, the climate crisis, and the increasing impact of artificial intelligence.
