A gunman was killed by Palestinian security officers in the West Bank on Thursday in an incident described as an "assassination" by his armed group, Islamic Jihad's Tulkarm and Nour Shams Camp Brigades.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) security services said their forces came under fire during a patrol in Tulkarm and returned fire, hitting and killing the gunman, identified as Ahmed Abu Al-Foul.
The brigades claimed Abu Al-Foul was unprovokedly targeted in his car.
Videos circulated online showed a car being hit by gunfire, but their authenticity was not confirmed by Reuters.
The circumstances of the incident are disputed.
President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority (PA) accused Israeli special forces of carrying out a crime, drawing a comparison to PA security operations in the West Bank.
The PA has limited self-rule in the area and sometimes collaborates with Israel on security matters.
The West Bank has seen chaos and poverty, with both the PA and Israel blaming each other.
Hamas, which governs Gaza and opposes Abbas' diplomatic approach to Israel, condemned attacks by PA security forces on their people and resistance fighters.
Occasional gunfights between Palestinian security forces and gunmen have resulted in few deaths.
