Israeli Private Investigator Arrested in London over US Cyberespionage Allegations: Extradition Attempt Thwarted
An Israeli private investigator, Amit Forlit, was arrested in London for allegedly carrying out a cyberespionage campaign on behalf of an unidentified American PR firm.
The US attempted to extradite Forlit, but the request was denied due to a legal technicality.
The US allegations against Forlit include his involvement in a "hack for hire" scheme, where an unnamed PR and lobbying firm paid one of Forlit's companies $20 million to gather intelligence on the Argentinian debt crisis.
A man named Forlit was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport while trying to fly to Israel, according to US authorities.
He is wanted in the US for three charges: conspiracy to commit computer hacking, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud.
However, a judge ruled against the extradition due to Forlit not being brought to court within the required timeframe under British law.
Consequently, Forlit was discharged.
Forlit and his lawyer have not responded to requests for comment regarding allegations of hacking emails of aviation executive Farhad Azima.
The FBI also did not comment.
Azima is suing Forlit and others in Manhattan federal court over stolen emails used against him in a 2020 London trial.
Forlit previously acknowledged retrieving Azima's emails but denies hacking, claiming he found them online.
