Israeli military action persists in the Gaza Strip, intensifying overnight with expansive air and ground attacks. At least 18 fatalities in the Nuseirat refugee camp have been reported by Palestinian sources, which also included an air strike that targeted a residential building.
In response to the violence, the Israeli Defense Forces have directed residents of the nearby Bureij camp to relocate towards Deir Al-Balah for safety reasons. Civilians like Ziad, a medical professional and father, are left questioning safe havens, while others, such as Walaa Al-Medini, have already faced injuries in their homes.
Simultaneously, the United Nations Security Council in New York has passed a resolution emphasizing the need for increased humanitarian aid in Gaza but stopped short of demanding a halt to hostilities.
The airstrike in Nuseirat that claimed lives and caused injuries is one of several incidents affecting critical infrastructure like a water treatment plant in Jabalia, northern Gaza. Furthermore, the air strikes near the Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis have disrupted medical services significantly.
Medical organization Doctors Without Borders has highlighted the severe destruction in northern Gaza, noting the consistent flow of casualties to Al-Nasser Hospital. The situation has led to dire conditions, with the World Food Program estimating that half a million people in Gaza are experiencing extreme food scarcity.
The conflict escalated after Hamas militants entered Israel on October 7, resulting in numerous casualties and abductions. Since then, thousands have been killed or injured in Gaza, according to Hamas-affiliated sources. Israel has expressed remorse for civilian casualties but has accused Hamas of embedding within civilian areas, a claim Hamas contests.
The UN Security Council has also pushed for better access for humanitarian efforts, calling for operational pauses and the establishment of aid delivery routes. The resolution, narrowly avoiding a U.S. veto, received broad support and seeks a sustainable end to the current hostilities.
As a part of the resolution, a UN-coordinated mechanism intends to expedite relief distribution, demanding unobstructed aid access and advocating for the immediate release of all hostages. Hamas has labeled the UN's efforts as inadequate, criticizing American influence, while UN Secretary-General
António Guterres has pointed out that the Israeli offensive is impeding aid operations in Gaza.
