Israel Announces Hostage Talks as Cabinet Backs Assault on Gaza City
Despite international opposition, Israeli government proceeds with plans to seize control of Gaza City.
TEL AVIV — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed negotiations to begin for the release of all remaining hostages and an end to the war in Gaza on terms 'acceptable to Israel.' Despite widespread international and domestic opposition, Netanyahu's cabinet has approved plans for a massive assault on Gaza City.
According to Israeli media, negotiators will be dispatched once a location is determined.
The Israeli government maintains that only 20 of the 50 hostages are still alive after 22 months of war.
Meanwhile, Palestinians report heavy bombardment in eastern areas of Gaza City and warn medical officials and international organizations to prepare for the evacuation of up to one million residents.
