Iraqi Students and Professors Rally in Solidarity with Gaza, Inspired by US Protests
Iraqi university students and professors held a rally at Al-Nahrain University in Baghdad on Thursday, expressing solidarity with Gaza and pro-Palestinian protests at US universities.
Education Minister Naeem Al-Aboudi supported the global protests and called for demonstrations in Iraq.
Students waved Palestinian and Iraqi flags and carried banners calling for a "free Palestine." Student Aya Kader, 20, stated that seeing the Palestinian flag at American universities encouraged them.
Protests have been ongoing for weeks at US universities.
Professor Jomaa Salman, head of the engineering faculty at Iraq's Columbia University, called for an end to the killing in Israel's war in Gaza and expressed gratitude for free voices supporting the cause.
The Iraqi embassy in Washington urged restraint, calm, and respect for human rights during the unrest on US campuses.
Iraq does not recognize Israel and supports the Palestinian people.
In 2019, Iraq experienced violent protests against the ruling establishment, resulting in over 600 deaths.
The United States, Israel's largest military supplier, has seen large-scale arrests of student protesters expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The Gaza war began after a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2000, resulting in the death of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli official figures.
In response, Israel launched a massive offensive, resulting in the death of at least 34,596 people in Gaza, primarily women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
Militants took hostages during the attack, with 129 still believed to be held in Gaza, including 34 reportedly dead by the military.
