Iran-backed Hezbollah Fires Rockets at Israeli Base in Golan Heights in Retaliation for Strike in Lebanon
On Monday, May 6, 2024, the Iran-backed Hezbollah group retaliated against Israel by firing "dozens of Katyusha rockets" at an Israeli base in the occupied Golan Heights.
The attack came in response to an Israeli strike earlier in the day in Lebanon's east, which reportedly wounded three people.
The Israeli army claimed they had targeted a Hezbollah "military compound." Hezbollah stated that their rockets hit the headquarters of the Golan Division at Nafah base.
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated since Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, leading to regular cross-border fire.
Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas and a militant group based in Lebanon, has increased attacks on northern Israel, leading to retaliatory strikes from the Israeli military.
In the latest incident, Israeli warplanes struck a factory in Sifri, Lebanon, wounding three civilians and destroying the building.
The Israeli army claimed it targeted a Hezbollah military structure in the same location.
Previously, a building in Sifri was targeted in an Israeli raid, while the Israeli army reportedly struck Hezbollah sites in eastern Lebanon.
Sifri, located near Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley, is a Hezbollah stronghold and has been frequently attacked by Israel in recent weeks.
On Sunday, an Israeli strike in Lebanon killed four family members, prompting Hezbollah to retaliate with rocket attacks on Kiryat Shmona in Israel.
The escalating violence has raised concerns of a full-scale conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, who went to war in 2006.
In Lebanon, at least 390 people have been killed and over 70 civilians among them in nearly seven months of cross-border violence.
Israel has reported 11 soldier and nine civilian deaths.
The violence has displaced tens of thousands on both sides.
