France Condemns Attack on Red Cross Convoy in Sudan, Urges Respect for Humanitarian Law
On Friday, France strongly condemned an attack on an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) convoy in Sudan, which resulted in the deaths of two ICRC staff members and injuries to three others.
The French foreign ministry called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the safety and unhindered access of humanitarian workers.
The ICRC reported that gunmen were responsible for the attack, which occurred in South Darfur as the convoy was returning from a humanitarian mission.
A violent conflict between the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of his ex-deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has been raging in Sudan for over a year.
The war has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions more, making it the largest crisis of its kind in the world according to the United Nations.
The conflict has also caused acute food shortages and a humanitarian crisis, putting the northeast African country's population at risk of starvation.
