Fighter jets practice approaches, landings at Lebanon Municipal Airport
The booming sound of fighter jets circling West Lebanon could be heard throughout much of the Upper Valley on Tuesday afternoon as two F-15s practiced approaches and landings at Lebanon Municipal Airport.
Each military jet, out of an airbase in Massachusetts, made four approaches on the runway shortly before 3:30 p.m., according to Airport Manager Carl Gross.
Gross, who took over running the city-owned airport in January, said this is the first time F-15s have visited West Lebanon during his tenure, although the facility does see its fair share of military helicopters from New Hampshire and Vermont.
“I think it was as much a surprise for us as it was for everybody else,” he said in a phone interview, adding the pilots contacted Lebanon’s air control tower shortly before arriving.
