Bannon, 70, was convicted in July 2022 for refusing to testify before the congressional panel investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

He was sentenced to four months in prison in October 2022 but had remained free while appealing the conviction.

However, the US Federal Appeals Court upheld the conviction in March, and on Thursday, US District Judge Carl Nichols revoked his bail and ordered him to report to prison.

Two former top advisors to President Trump, Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, have been convicted of contempt of Congress and are serving prison sentences.

Bannon, who served as White House chief strategist from 2017 to 2018, was charged with wire fraud and money laundering in 2020 for misusing funds raised for building a border wall with Mexico.

Navarro, 74, who was a trade adviser, began serving a four-month sentence in March for refusing to comply with a subpoena related to Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Both men are the highest-ranking former members of the Trump administration to face criminal charges.

Former White House advisor Steve Bannon was pardoned by then-President Donald Trump in January 2021, just before he left office, resulting in the dismissal of charges against Bannon in relation to a scheme to defraud donors to a border wall fund.

Trump himself is currently facing trial in Washington on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, won by Democrat Joe Biden.

However, Trump's trial has been put on hold until the Supreme Court rules on Trump's claim that as a former president, he is immune from prosecution.

Trump, who is 77 years old, was previously impeached by the House of Representatives for a second time in 2021, charged with inciting an insurrection following the Capitol riot, but was acquitted by the Senate.
