Saudi Arabia Eyes Strategic Green Hydrogen Partnerships with Europe Amid Varied Global Crises

Saudi Arabia partners with Italy to supply Europe with green and blue hydrogen energy.
Saudi Arabia is aiming to form strategic partnerships with Italy to supply green energy, notably renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, to Europe. Investments in green and blue hydrogen are part of Saudi Arabia’s larger plan to diversify its economy and bolster low-carbon production. The Kingdom is also looking at partnerships with Germany and other European nations in line with the EU's target of producing and importing 20 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.

Shifting focus to Sudan, intensified fighting in Khartoum has driven hundreds of families to flee a northern suburb. The ongoing conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in massive casualties and displacements, deepening the humanitarian crisis. Amid reports of potential war crimes, the UN and WHO's head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, are calling for an independent force to protect civilians and are assessing the health crisis.

Meanwhile, controversy has erupted at the Venice Film Festival over the screening of "Russians at War," a Russian war documentary. Ukrainian politicians and cultural figures have condemned the film as pro-Kremlin propaganda, accusing it of justifying Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The filmmaker, Anastasia Trofimova, defends her work as anti-war, facing potential prosecution in Russia for her stance.

Turning to Kenya, a tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy has claimed 18 lives, prompting an investigation and urgent safety reviews in schools. The blaze in the dormitory has left many unaccounted for, with forensic experts working to identify remains and the Kenya Red Cross supporting affected families. Government officials, including President William Ruto, have expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

In France, protests have erupted following President Emmanuel Macron’s appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister. Left-wing parties criticized the move, claiming Macron ignored the legislative election results which split the parliament into three blocs. Barnier now faces the immense task of forming a government, tackling the 2025 budget, and addressing potential no-confidence votes.

Lastly, a national memorial for Queen Elizabeth II is set to grace St. James's Park in central London. The memorial will offer a space for reflection near The Mall and Buckingham Palace, honoring her legacy alongside statues of her parents. Additional memorials in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will commemorate her remarkable 70-year reign.
