Gaza’s Children Face Grim Future as Conflict Halts Formal Education for Second Year

Gaza's children face a grim future as ongoing conflict with Israel disrupts their education for a second consecutive year. Aid efforts fall short, endangering the cognitive and emotional development of over 625,000 school-age children.
Gaza’s children face a grim future as the ongoing conflict with Israel forces the area into a second consecutive school year without formal education, impacting over 625,000 school-age children. Most educational institutions are either damaged or destroyed, leading many youngsters into early labor or marriage while living in tent cities. Aid groups like UNICEF and UNRWA strive to provide temporary learning solutions, but resources fall short, threatening the cognitive and emotional development of the youth.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Yagi has left a trail of devastation in its path, claiming 2 lives and injuring 92 people on China's Hainan Island and causing massive evacuations in both China and the Philippines. With winds reaching up to 245 kph, the typhoon caused over 800,000 households to lose power and uprooted nearly 420,000 residents in China alone. The Philippines, affected earlier, saw over 2 million people impacted, with landslides and flooding resulting in 16 deaths and 17 missing individuals.

Shifting to sports, Italy celebrated a historic 3-1 victory over France in the UEFA Nations League, overturning an early goal in the first round of Group B matches. France's Bradley Barcola scored just 15 seconds into the game, but Italy’s Federico Dimarco equalized in the 30th minute, followed by goals from Davide Frattesi and Giacomo Raspadori in the second half. This milestone marks Italy's first win on French soil since 1954.

On the diplomatic front, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at stepping down from his position after the upcoming November elections to spend more time with his family. Blinken, during his visit to Haiti, the first by a U.S. Secretary of State in a decade, noted his exhaustive schedule, including nine Middle East tours since the Hamas attack on Israel in October. Such decisions are uncommon, with the last instance being George Shultz in the 1980s.

Turning to Eastern Europe, Russia announced its control over seven towns in Donetsk, Ukraine, within the past week, claiming significant losses on the Ukrainian side, amounting to 15,765 soldiers either killed or injured. Russian forces executed 17 high-precision strikes from August 31 to September 6, targeting industrial sites, critical infrastructure, and military equipment. The total count of destroyed Ukrainian equipment since the start of the special military operation now includes hundreds of aircraft, helicopters, and drones.

Lastly, in North Africa, Algerians headed to the polls to vote in a presidential election with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 78, seeking a second term amid growing economic optimism. The contest pits Tebboune against moderate Islamist Abdelaali Hassani and socialist Youcef Aouchiche, following high abstention rates in the 2019 elections. Preliminary results are expected by Saturday night, with official results to be announced by Sunday.
