Afghan diplomat Zakia Wardak, the only woman in Afghanistan's diplomatic service and the consul-general for Mumbai, India, resigned after reports emerged of her being detained at the airport for allegedly smuggling 25 kilograms of gold from Dubai.
Indian media reported that she was not arrested due to diplomatic immunity.
Wardak made no mention of the allegations in her resignation statement, instead expressing regret over facing attacks that aimed to destroy her as the only woman in
Afghanistan's diplomatic service.
A female Afghan diplomat, named Wardak, resigned due to personal attacks and defamation against her and her family.
These attacks severely affected her ability to perform her role.
Wardak was the first Afghan female diplomat to collaborate with the Taliban, who have barred women from public life and education beyond the sixth grade since taking over
Afghanistan in 2021.
The Taliban did not comment on Wardak's resignation.
It's unclear if she was the only female diplomat in the country.
The Taliban is limiting women's rights by restricting their access to work, travel, and healthcare if they are unmarried or don't have a male guardian.
Additionally, they are arresting women who don't adhere to the Taliban's interpretation of the hijab, or Islamic headscarf.
