Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council Commends Saudi Arabia's Support Amid Ongoing Conflict

Yemen's President Al-Alimi praises Saudi Arabia's humanitarian, financial, and security aid while condemning Houthi militia's actions and human rights violations.
Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, expressed deep gratitude for Saudi Arabia's continued support for Yemen, highlighting the Kingdom's crucial role in stabilizing Yemen's government amidst ongoing conflict.

Al-Alimi emphasized that without Saudi aid, the Yemeni government would struggle to fulfill its fundamental duties, such as paying public sector salaries.

He described the relationship with Saudi Arabia as unparalleled, spanning across security, social, and economic spheres.

Al-Alimi specifically commended Saudi Arabia's humanitarian efforts, particularly through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, and the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen.

He also lauded the impact of Project Masam, which works to clear landmines in Yemen, further contributing to the country's safety and stability.

In relation to the Houthis, Al-Alimi supported the U.S. designation of the group as a terrorist organization, stressing that this move was necessary to curb the militia's ongoing military aggression and human rights abuses.

Despite diplomatic efforts, the Houthis have consistently escalated violence, including targeting civilian infrastructure, oil facilities, and international shipping routes.

Al-Alimi reiterated that peace can only be achieved when the Houthis abandon their militant approach and engage in meaningful negotiations.

Al-Alimi highlighted the devastating toll of the conflict, which has claimed over 500,000 lives and displaced millions.

He noted that the war, fueled by the Houthis' refusal to respect national agreements and engage in peace talks, has exacerbated Yemen's humanitarian crisis.

The Yemeni government has consistently welcomed peace initiatives, including a 2022 truce, but Houthi violations have undermined these efforts, deepening the crisis.

The Presidential Leadership Council's actions, according to Al-Alimi, focus on restoring Yemen’s sovereignty, bolstering its economy, and ensuring that humanitarian assistance continues to flow despite the ongoing conflict.

He also addressed the political situation, describing the Houthi movement's claim of a 'divine right' to rule as an obstacle to peace, as it rejects Yemen's constitutional framework and international laws.

On the issue of human rights violations, Al-Alimi condemned the Houthis for their abductions of UN staff and activists, and their continued attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

He also criticized the international community's insufficient response to these abuses, calling on the UN to relocate its operations from Houthi-controlled areas to the temporary capital, Aden.

Despite the mounting challenges, Al-Alimi outlined the growing strength of the national alliance against the Houthis, strengthened by Saudi-led support.

The Presidential Leadership Council, formed in April 2022, is focused on unifying Yemen’s factions and fortifying their collective efforts in both military and diplomatic arenas.

The situation in the liberated provinces, such as Hadramout, remains a key focus.

Al-Alimi reassured citizens that their economic grievances, worsened by Houthi attacks on oil infrastructure, would be addressed through a detailed framework designed to stabilize the region and meet local demands.

He reaffirmed Yemen's commitment to addressing its internal economic issues while securing its sovereignty and stability in the face of ongoing external aggression.
