US Announces New Sanctions Against Russia's Largest Oil Companies Amid Escalating Conflict in Ukraine

The US Treasury Department imposes sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil amid ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil, two of Russia's largest oil companies, as well as dozens of their subsidiaries.

These sanctions come in response to Moscow’s refusal to cease its 'senseless war' in Ukraine.

The move follows months of bipartisan pressure on President Donald Trump to impose stricter sanctions on Russia’s oil industry.

Bessent stated that the Treasury Department is prepared to take further action if necessary to support Trump's efforts to end the conflict.

The sanctions were announced as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with US President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included coordinating deliveries of weapons to Ukraine from countries such as Canada and European nations.

The same day, Russian drones and missiles targeted several Ukrainian cities, killing at least six people, including two young daughters.

This attack was part of a larger wave of strikes that hit at least eight different regions across Ukraine.

In Kyiv, the capital city, at least 29 people were injured, including five children.

The city appeared to be the primary target of the assault.

Additionally, Russian drones struck a kindergarten in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulting in one death and six injuries.

The conflict has seen Trump's efforts to end the war stagnate.

Despite his previous offers for direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin, no progress has been made towards resolving the conflict.

Instead, both sides have continued to invest in long-range strike capabilities intended to target each other’s rear areas.

In response to the ongoing situation, Ukraine claims to have struck key Russian military and industrial facilities.

The Ukrainian army's general staff reported that they targeted a chemical plant in Russia's Bryansk region using British-made air-launched Storm Shadow missiles.

This facility is known for producing ammunition and missile fuel.

The escalating conflict has led to increased pressure on Russia, with more international sanctions likely to be discussed at an upcoming EU summit in Brussels.

The Coalition of the Willing, a group of 35 countries supporting Ukraine, will also convene in London to further address the situation.

The situation remains dire as both sides continue to suffer heavy losses.

Russian forces have not made significant territorial gains despite their numerical advantage.

Instead, they have focused on targeting energy infrastructure and causing widespread blackouts across Ukraine.

As winter approaches, these attacks threaten to leave millions without power or heating just as cold weather sets in.
