UN Report Commends Saudi Arabia's Success in Integrated Water Resources Management

Saudi Arabia highlighted for rapid progress in water security and sustainability efforts.
Saudi Arabia has garnered international recognition for its advancements in integrated water resources management, particularly in a region marked by extreme water scarcity.

This accolade came during the SDG 6 Water Action Agenda Special Event at the United Nations headquarters in New York, as part of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

The Kingdom's efforts have been acknowledged by UN-Water for demonstrating clear and measurable progress under SDG 6, focusing on clean water and sanitation.

Led by Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, the deputy minister for water at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Saudi Arabia presented its strategic approach to accelerating progress towards achieving SDG 6.

The event not only showcased successes within the sector but also spotlighted nations making significant strides in water management.

According to the report, Saudi Arabia stands out as a success story with its rapid advancements in integrated water resources management.

Between 2017 and 2023, the Kingdom saw notable improvements in efficiency, coordination, and service quality.

Specifically, the indicator for integrated water resources management escalated from 57% to 83%, representing one of the most significant global increases under SDG indicator 6.5.1.

Al-Shaibani emphasized that robust support from Saudi Arabia's leadership facilitated substantial reforms aimed at sustainable water management.

This included substantial investments in expanding and modernizing water infrastructure, which significantly improved the Kingdom's 'enabling environment' score — rising from 42% in 2017 to 87% in 2023.

The recognition by UN-Water reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to addressing water security and sustainability challenges, setting a precedent for other nations facing similar conditions.

The achievements underscored during the event offer valuable insights into effective strategies for managing water resources sustainably, particularly in regions with limited availability.
